We decided that the first people we wanted to share the exciting news with would be our immediate family members (parental units, brothers, sister-in-law, etc.). While we would have preferred to wait a little while, we were leaving for a trip soon with family/friends that would pretty much reveal the secret itself. Not thinking I would be pregnant so soon we had made plans to do Cedar Point, sand duning, buffalo feeding, and other fun pregnancy activities. Luckily, we did not book the white water rafting excursion! Regardless, me not doing roller coasters or attempting the "I'm too scared" fib was not going to go over. Plus, I was dying to tell our parents! So August 31, we devised a scheme to get the family members over for a "family dinner" the pretense being that we were going to be very busy with the upcoming football season and work, and wanted to spend some quality time together. As Tanya told me after the fact, Cindy and she knew exactly what it meant, especially when we kept reminding people that they had to be there and that they were not going to want to miss this. Unfortunatley, two very important people were not able to attend...my dad as well as Chris' dad Mike. We decided that we would call them before the dinner even started so at least they would be the first to know and could be there in spirit :)
I actually did want to do something cute for the dinner since I had not done anything special for telling Chris. I found this cute idea to write the message on top of a cake and serve it after dinner. Not super original, but it was easy enough to pull off and wouldn't be overly complicated. And I am not too embarrased to say where I got my idea from. Just ask me because Chris will just shake his head if I post it on our blog (and I'm trying to keep the headshakes down to ten a month and I'm already over my limit). Ironically, this meant that the first people to find out about my pregnancy besides my husband were the people behind the Publix counter. That was kind of a funny moment getting congratulated by people I didn't know, and being completely nervous on top of it all. And then there was the issue with the cake itself....Chris had decided that ice cream cake would be best because (a) ice cream cake is best and (b) we could keep it hidden in the freezer so it wouldn't be sitting out when people came over. Sounded like a great plan except Publix keeps a lot of their cakes in their freezer besides ice cream cake. I even pulled a phone a friend (thanks Katie for your help) to try and get the right one...but of course I failed. I could have asked the ladies at the counter especially since they were soon going to be in on the secret, but what can I say? I'm too proud to ask for help. I stuck it in the freezer when I got home thinking I could will it to be an ice cream cake, but luckily came to my senses and just put it in the fridge like a normal person.
Before I knew it, Chris' mom and step-dad were over with tons of food from Boston Market shortly followed by Mike and Tanya and my own mother. We all sat down for a great meal with good conversation. I was pretty nervous the entire time, and kind of picked over the whole meal- except for the macaroni and cheese. Thank goodness for the macaroni! Finally, the meal was through and the conversation was dying down, and Chris was like let's bring out the cake. This should have given it away that something was up because Chris is not a cake person, and always opts for ice cream or some other type of dessert. He brought it over and put it in the middle of the table and took off the lid. I remember Cindy leaned over and was like "What does that say?" and before I knew it people were standing up with big smiles and running over to give me a hug. There was a lot of estrogen in the room so Ken and Mike were a little outnumbered in that regard. All the girls were tearing up and it was overall just a really special moment.
At that point it was time to do two speaker phonecalls to my brothers Trip (living in Maryland) and Bobby (living in Lakeland)-two other very important people :). This was probably the most humorous part of the night. I called Bobby first and the first words out of his mouth were "Is it Chris'?" which made everyone laugh including my mom (You just wait little brother). I then called Trip who was at a baseball game with really bad reception so I got "WHAT? WHAT??? OMG!!!! :static:" which was just as funny. They were both really excited and asked for permission to tell their girlfriends who were both right next to them and probably wondering what they were hyperventilating about.
Pretty soon it was time to say goodbye and get some much needed rest before our big trip the next day. It's crazy to think that the morning after we were on a plane to Ohio which is a whole other story. But this was truly one of the best ways I can think of to start off this amazing journey together.
